This site is named after somebody. Not a brand, not a character — a woman from a village in Rattanaburi district, Surin.

แม่ของพลอยเป็นคนบ้านดอนแรด รัตนบุรี พอแต่งงาน พ่อกับแม่ก็ไปทำงานที่กรุงเทพฯ เหมือนคนในหมู่บ้านเกือบทุกคน พลอยจึงเกิดที่กรุงเทพฯ แต่โตที่หมู่บ้าน กับยาย

Her mother is from Don Raet, in Rattanaburi. When her parents married they did what nearly everyone in that village does: they went to Bangkok to work. So Ploy was born in Bangkok, and raised in the village, by her grandmother.

In Isan that is not a rare sad story. It is the story. More than a third of the children in the northeast live with neither parent, and four in five of those live with grandparents. It has a name in the research — the skipped-generation household — and Ploy is not a teacher who happens to come from it. She is one of those children.

วันที่ 18 พฤศจิกายน 2553 สำนักงานเขตพื้นที่การศึกษาประถมศึกษาสุรินทร์ เขต 2 ร่วมกับเครือข่ายโรงเรียนรัตนบุรี 3 จัดงานศิลปหัตถกรรมนักเรียน หนึ่งในรายการแข่งขันคือ Story Telling — การเล่านิทานเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ โรงเรียนบ้านหาญฮีส่งเด็กหญิงคนหนึ่งจากบ้านดอนแรดเข้าแข่ง ครูจงกล (Mrs. Jongkol Jindathanaphas) เป็นผู้ฝึกซ้อม

เธอได้เหรียญทอง ช่วงชั้นที่ 2 — อายุประมาณสิบขวบ ยืนเล่าเรื่องเป็นภาษาที่ไม่มีใครในบ้านพูดได้ และเป็นที่หนึ่งของเขต

On 18 November 2010, at the district student arts competition, a girl from Don Raet stood up for Ban Han Hee School and told a story in English, coached by a teacher named Jongkol Jindathanaphas. She won the gold medal, Level 2 — the upper primary. She was about ten, and she was the best in the district at a language nobody in her house could speak.

A ten-year-old in a village school wins a gold medal in English. Twelve years later, in a one-room apartment in Bangkok that she shares with her mother, she cannot hold a conversation in it.
